We’re about halfway through Cyber Monday 2016 and so far things are looking good. According to a report from Reuters, sales already totalled $490 million by 10 a.m. EST, pointing toward the biggest Cyber Monday ever. By the end of the day, sales are expected to reach $3.36 billion, an increase of 9.4 percent over last year.
This is following a very profitable Thanksgiving and Black Friday that brought in $5.27 billion, an increase of a whopping 18% over 2015. Experts credit the healthy economy for the rise in spending.
As in the past few years, the winners in weekend sales were retail giants Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy with the best sellers being ultra HDTVs and gaming consoles. Also selling well were UGG boots and beauty products with handbags lagging.
While some stores were running more promotions in 2016, others had cut back the number of deals. Chains running the most promotions were JC Penney and Macy’s, both of which depend heavily on apparel sales. Both have also been closing stores due to falling revenues. Amazon is expected to offer a record number of deals this year while Target has reduced the overall number.
A report from the National Retail Federation estimates that 122.1 million people will shop online during Cyber Monday and 28% of them will do so from their mobile devices. NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay explained the spending habits of Cyber Monday shoppers: “On Cyber Monday, retailers deliver online discounts unlike any other day of the year—driving consumers to shop online no matter where they are or what device they’re shopping from.
“Millions of consumers shopped over Thanksgiving weekend and reserved a portion of their budgets exclusively for Cyber Monday, knowing that there will be digital deals that are too good to pass up.”
It’s interesting to note than the most-promoted products and top sellers of Cyber Monday are big-ticket items like smart TVs, tablets and gaming consoles. That seems to indicate that shoppers are in the mood to spend money this year – a lot of money.
On Cyber Monday you can find hot deals on tech items like TVs, laptops and gaming consoles all over the Internet but a few stand out as being really worth checking out. Here are six of the best deals so far on popular items.
Vizio 50” SmartCast Class E Series 4K Ultra HD Smart TV – Walmart
Save $150 on this big smart TV, now marked down to $378 from $528. If you’re looking for a 50” smart TV under $400, this is a good deal.
LG 55” 55UH6930 4K Smart TV – Walmart
Another super-sized smart TV, this LG model regularly priced at $749.99 is now going for $499.99. Walmart is always a winner when it comes to Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals on TVs and this year is no exception.
PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB System with Free the Last of Us Remastered and Rachet & Clank – GameStop
$399.99 is the regular price for just the PS 4 Pro 1 TB but GameStop is including two popular games for free so this deal qualifies as one of the best gaming deals of Cyber Monday 2016.
Xbox One S 1TB Console Battlefield 1 Special Edition Console – Amazon
You can find the 500GB version of this Xbox bundle for $249.99 at just about all of the major chains but only Amazon has the 1TB model for just $5 more – $254.99. This one ships on December 7, which is still in plenty of time for Christmas.
Dell Inspiron 15 Signature Edition Laptop with Touchscreen – Microsoft
With a big 15.6” screen, 8GB RAM, 1TB of storage and a Touchscreen, this Dell laptop has it all and Microsoft has cut $350 off the list price of $749 to sell it for $399. This is definitely a super Cyber Monday deal.
Acer Chromebook 13 – Amazon
Chromebooks get a bad rap from some purists but they’re light, fast and budget-friendly, especially when they’re selling for less than half price like this Acer model originally priced at $280 now going for $129.99 at Amazon.
Alas, the prices seem to be rather stagnant on the latest Xbox One and PS4 consoles but some retailers are including extra goodies with your purchase. If you’ve been putting off buying one of these in hopes of a better deal, here are a few to check out.
These gaming consoles don’t come cheap so a buyer should consider the options carefully. How much are the extras and freebies worth to you? Will you really enjoy the free games? On the other hand, a lower price, a gift card or an extra controller are definitely worth grabbing!
It’s possible that other retailers will try to match these prices during the day on Cyber Monday so check more than one site before making your purchase.
Shop early on Cyber Monday for the best deals. If that means getting on your computer or smartphone at a minute past midnight, just be happy you’re at home and not camped out in a mall parking lot!
PS4 Slim 500GB
There are so far two deals worth considering. $249 will buy you The Uncharted 4 Bundle plus Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Rise of the Tomb Raider on eBay. The same sum will get you the Uncharted 4 Bundle and a $50 gift card at Walmart. Would you rather have the two games or the $50?
The lowest price so far for this console is $339.99 at Amazon. Most retailers have it for $399.99.
Xbox One S 500GB
Walmart is selling the Special Edition storm gray console with Battlefield 1 for $249. That’s the same price you’d pay for the regular model at practically every other chain. Walmart also has the Xbox One S 500GB bundle with your choice of Battlefield 2 or Minecraft, your choice of one of four Blu-rays and a $20 gift card for $250.
Xbox One S 1TB
Several choices for this console including this build-your-own bundle deal with an extra Xbox One Controller and Gears of War 4 for $324 at Walmart. $349.99 will get you the bundle including Gears of War 4 plus a year of Xbox Live. For $299 you can have your choice of two bundles from the official Microsoft site: the FIFA 17 bundle with an additional game and savings on accessories or the same bundle with Halo 5 and the Master Chief Collection.
Good luck and happy gaming!
This is not the best Cyber Monday ever to get a super deal on a smartphone. Just a few years ago, retailers and carriers were offering the latest phones free or at deeply discounted prices in return for a two-year contract. Alas, those days are gone but some sellers are willing to toss in a free gift card with your purchase and there are decent deals on refurbs and unlocked models that liberate you from two years of payments.
This big box chain is offering a $250 gift card with your purchase of an iPhone 7S. Get a $160 gift card when you buy an iPhone SE. Best Buy is also offering $100 off if you buy and activate an iPhone as well as purchase a set of Beats Solo 3 or Powerbeats 3 at the same time. This offer seems a bit iffy since you might be able to find the headphones cheaper someplace else.
Buy and activate a Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge and get a free Samsung Gear VR headset plus a $250 gift card if you go with AT&T or a $400 gift card for Sprint or Verizon.
Get $120 off and a free wireless charger when you buy an unlocked 32GB Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
Get a $100 Best Buy gift card when you buy and activate a Google Pixel phone with a monthly plan on Verizon.
Get $100 off plus a free battery charger when you buy and activate a Moto X phone with a Verizon monthly plan.
Get $100 off an unlocked Huawei smartphone, now selling for $299.99.
Get the unlocked international version of the Samsung Galaxy S7 for $523.62. Other deals on unlocked phones include the Moto G Plus for $199.99, the 32GB Asus ZenFone for $199, the LG Stylo 2 for $69.99 and the FreedomPop Samsung Galaxy S6 LTE for $799.99 to $139.99. Of course, since this is Amazon, newer deals could pop up at any time.

Walmart’s Cyber Monday smartphone deals aren’t that exciting since most of them are for Straight Talk prepaid models. You can get the Straight Talk 16GB iPhone 6 Plus originally priced at $649 for $399 and the Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy S5 regularly selling for $349 for $149.
