How to Choose the Most Welcome Gift Card

Gift Cards are easy to buy and send, making them a great deal for the giver but not always welcomed by the giftee. In order to buy the right card for everyone you have to know a little about his or her shopping habits and lifestyle.

For that starving student on your list or anyone who loves grabbing a quick snack, how about a card from Subway, Burger King, Cracker Barrel, IHOP or McDonald’s? For the giftee who prefers casual dining, there are cards available from Chili’s, Applebee’s, Olive Garden, Outback and Red Lobster. For a boss or client, there are even cards from Morton’s Steakhouse.

If there’s a fashionista on your gift list, she’ll adore a card from Nordstrom, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor or Sak’s Fifth Avenue. The bargain hunter will enjoy hunting for deals from TJ Maxx, Marshall’s or Kohl’s. If you know your giftee’s favorite store that makes choosing even easier.

For online shoppers, the Amazon gift card is a one-size-fits-all solution since this retailer sells practically anything and everything. For the person who gets most of their entertainment online, there are cards from iTunes, Hulu Plus and Google Play.

Any gamer would be happy to get a card from Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation Network or GameStop. Sports lovers will enjoy cards from Bass Pro Shops, Nike, Foot Locker or Sports Authority. For the friend whose dog or cat eats better than they do, there are cards from Petco or PetSmart.

If you know your giftee frequents the big box stores, all of them have gift cards including Target, Sears, Kmart, Home Depot, Lowes and Best Buy.

Be sure the card is appropriate for the recipient. A Victoria’s Secret card is fine for your wife or girlfriend but not your child’s teacher. A gym membership or one to Weight Watchers sends the wrong message to anyone who wishes you would stop bugging them about their weight. Be sure you choose a card that the recipient will enjoy using!

Are You Ready for Super Saturday?

Just because you didn’t find a hot sale price on everything that’s on your holiday shopping list on Black Friday or Cyber Monday doesn’t mean that all the deals are over. There’s one more big shopping day coming up and retailers are planning to take advantage of it!

The last Saturday before Christmas has become known as Super Saturday and the analytics firm ShopperTalk expects both sales and traffic for this date to beat those of Black Friday. While Black Friday 2014 racked up an impressive $9.1 billion in sales, Super Saturday, which this year falls on December 20, is expected to beat that figure with sales of $10 billion.

ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin credits the high hopes for Super Saturday to “a favorable calendar position.” Coming five days before Christmas makes Super Saturday the last hurrah for many shoppers who realize they have to wind up their shopping ASAP and better settle for the sale prices they’re finding rather than hoping for better ones.

So what does this mean for bargain-hunting shoppers? For one thing, you’re not likely to see the kind of big storewide promotions that marked Black Friday but can expect to see deep discounts on certain items. You’re less likely to see major deals on TVs, so you may be looking at the lowest prices of 2014 during what’s left of Cyber Week.

Also, the best places to shop on Super Saturday will be retailers with both a physical and online presence like Target, Walmart, Sears, Kmart, Kohl’s, JCPenney and Macy’s.

The two categories where shoppers can expect deep Super Saturday discounts are apparel and holiday decorations. Both have limited shelf lives and retailers would like to see them off their shelves by Christmas Day.

Buying decorations for as much as 75% off has become a day-after-Christmas tradition but you need adequate storage space to stash the stuff until next year. Those big discounts make the most sense for expensive items like fancy wreathes that you can pick up for practically nothing in the days just before and after Christmas.

The other category is winter apparel, which retailers are already marking down drastically in hopes of clearing it all out to make room for the spring collections coming after the first of the year. This month is a great time to pick up items you can use all year long, like tees, hoodies, jeans and boots, all at super low prices.

Super Saturday is already sounding, well, super.

The Case for Black Friday Shopping Online – Part 2

There are lots of pluses to shopping online, especially when the weather turns nasty and the thought of bundling up in your parka and driving on slick streets to the mall gives you a headache. Another reason for shopping online is that there are ways to get special secret deals from the retailers that you buy from most frequently.

How to get the best deals from your favorite retailers

Any pro shopper knows that you can sign up for emails from most chains and get advance notices about sales and discounts. Best of all, some of them will send you coupon codes good for a percentage off items or your entire order. If you work it right, you can combine sales with promo codes to get really cool deals.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a promo code from plus-size online mall OneStopPlus for 40% off one item. There was a coat sale going on at the same time and I found a faux leather jacket for half price, marked down to $59.99 from $119.99. I used the 40% off coupon and got the jacket for about $36. It came a few days ago, looks cool and I didn’t have to leave the house to get it!

Sears and Kmart have a program called Shop Your Way that offers members’ discounts and private sales that are not open to the public. If you ever shop at one of these chains, it’s worth your time to join up.

It’s a good idea to sign up for those email lists ahead of sale events to make sure you receive news on sales and other events as well as private promo codes. Some retailers send those on their mailing lists invitations to special sales that last only one day or just a few hours. Sure, your email box may get cluttered up with messages from retailers but you can be sure of getting in on the best deals!
