No matter how well you plan your holiday shopping, there always seems to be one more gift that you need to pick up. Fortunately, quite a few stores will be open long hours in the days leading up to Christmas. Here are some good bets for last-minute holiday shopping.
Barnes and Noble stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on December 23 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. B&N is a cool place to shop for Nook readers, CDs and DVDs, gift cards, and of course, books.
Best Buy will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight on December 23 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This big box retailer is always a great place to get low prices on mobile devices and other electronics.
JCPenney stores will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight on December 23 and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December 24. Look for big discounts on clothing, electronics and more from this struggling chain.
Kmart locations will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight on December 23 and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This is one of the later Christmas Eve openings so stores should be busy with last minute shoppers looking for deals on toys and electronics.
Kohl’s stores will be open 24 hours from 6 a.m. on Friday, December 19 until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Look for lots of coupon codes, extra discounts and more Kohl’s Cash.
Macy’s stores will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight on December 23 and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This should be a good place to get early after-Christmas deals on apparel and accessories, so if you’re a frugal fashionista it may be worth your time to run through your local Macy’s store on the afternoon of December 24.
Office Depot and OfficeMax locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on December 23 and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Sears stores will be open 7 a.m. to midnight on December 23 and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This looks like another good bet to start marking things down early all over the store.
Target stores are open from 8 a.m. to midnight December 23 and 24.
Walmart locations will be open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on December 23 and 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Look for last minutes deals storewide.
At a time of year when most retailers are desperately trying to get your business, Kmart is angering customers with actions that seem designed to drive them away. Some Kmart shoppers who planned ahead by putting their holiday gifts on layaway and paying them off before the December 14 deadline have been informed that their orders have been cancelled. As if that wasn’t bad enough, refunds may not arrive in time to use the cash on replacing the lost gifts. Understandably, customers are angry.
The Consumerist has been flooded with complaints from Kmart customers who had this nasty little lump of coal dumped into their stockings just a week before Christmas. These unlucky shoppers were informed via email on Sunday that their orders would not be shipped and the items were out of stock. Irate customers have turned to Kmart’s Facebook page as well as their local news outlets to express their rage and get answers from the company.
So far, the only official word from Kmart has been this: “We are very disappointed to hear that you had to go through this experience with your layaway order. Please let us know if you do not see your refund within 5-7 business days.”
That’s absolutely no help to the parent who put one of the season’s most in-demand toys on layaway several weeks ago and now will not only be missing the toy, they will not receive the money to replace it until after Christmas. If that toy in one of the several that are totally out of stock everywhere, this parent’s kid will not be having a very merry Christmas.
A few customers have received personal answers from Kmart but only after rattling the right cages. One disgruntled shopper in Indiana turned to the consumer reporter at Call 6 in Indianapolis and did get 10 of her 12 layaway items sent plus a $50 Kmart gift card.
Whether this is a new policy or just a computer glitch, Kmart needs to get on top of it and satisfy their irate layaway customers.
The hottest toy of the 2014 shopping season is Disney’s Frozen Castle and Ice Palace Playset which is sold out practically everywhere at the list price of $119 and going for sums up to $700 on eBay and from Amazon resellers. While this item is the most wanted toy of the year, it’s not the only one likely to be in short supply as Christmas gets closer. There are two more toys that are becoming harder to find on the shelves.
The Max Tow Truck
This item has a list price of $59.99 but good luck finding one at that price. Amazon resellers have this one in several colors if you don’t mind paying more than twice that price. Target had the Max Tow Truck for $47.99, which is probably why it’s currently out of stock. Walmart had it in blue for $49.99 but it’s out of stock there also. Same deal at Kmart. The good news is that it’s still available in red at Toys R Us for $49.99.
Imaginext Supernova Battle Rover
This toy can still be found for slightly under the list price of $119 but it’s going fast at stores like Toys R Us, which has it for $99.99 with a limit of 4 items per customer. At Amazon, it’s $148 with the warning that there are only 15 left in stock. 29 Amazon resellers have it starting at $135.21. This toy is priced at $99.99 at Target but it’s out of stock online and at all stores in my area. Walmart has it for $85 with free shipping and free store pickup so that looks like your best bet for now.
These two aren’t the only toys likely to disappear from store shelves before Christmas Eve. Other endangered species are items from Lego, Barbie, My Little Pony and Nerf. The entire Disney Frozen line is expected to join the Castle Playset as permanently out of stock. If any of these toys are on your wish list, the time to buy is now!
