Apple Goes RED to Benefit AIDS Over the Holidays

Apple has just launched a campaign using its app store, online store and retail locations to raise money for RED, a charity founded by U2 singer Bono to eradicate HIV/AIDS. Proceeds from the two-week campaign will be donated to The Global Fund, which provides antiretroviral treatment to AIDS patients.

The campaign, which starts today and runs through December 7, will feature 25 apps that have been customized with RED-themed tweaks. Funds raised from the purchase of these apps and upgrades will be donated. In addition, on Black Friday, all U.S. Apple retail stores and online retailers will offer buyers of select products a special edition RED gift card with portions of the proceeds going to The Global Fund.

World AIDS Day is December 1 and Apple will be donating a portion of sales online and in-store to this worthy cause. Since December 1 is also Cyber Monday, we can expect some deals and discounts from Apple.

Among the 25 available apps are some of the most popular items in Apple’s App Store with new twists. Angry Birds will get the addition of RED’s Mighty Feathers and a bonus golden egg level. A Mercedes Benz-AMG GT will be added to CSR Racing. Clash of Clans players will gain special edition RED gems and a RED badge of honor.

Players of FarmVille 2: Country Escape will be able to “Roll out the RED Carpet” and buy new limited-time items like St. Bernard and Cozy Cow. Users of GarageBand will be able to choose from an extensive collection of 300 bass, guitar, drum and synth loops to add to their musical creations.

Even the Kim Kardashian app gets the RED treatment as players can purchase new items like Beats RED Solo 2 headphones and see momager Kris Jenner make her in-game debut on December 1.

Check out all 25 apps at the Apple App Store and help to make AIDS a thing of the past.
