Instead of developing a tablet to compete with Apple’s Ipad, Google has taken aim at the Amazon Kindle Fire. The tablet market is solidly dominated by the Apple Ipad. Estimates of tablet market share from 2011 show Apple holding 62% of the tablet market with 40.5 million units sold. The second largest competitor, Samsung, produces the Galaxy Tab. Samsung has taken 9% of the tablet market with 6.1 million units sold.
Google aims to sap market share from the third largest tablet maker Amazon.com. Amazon’s Kindle Fire has 6% of the tablet market and has sold 3.9 million units.
Comparatively, the Google Nexus 7 will retail at $199 for an 8GB Nexus 7 and $249 for a 16GB Nexus 7. Amazon’s Kindle Fire retails at $199 for an 8GB. The Kindle Fire does not have a 16GB version; however, according to Amazon, 8GB is “enough for 80 apps, plus 10 movies or 800 songs or 6,000 books”.
The Nexus 7 tablet, like the Kindle Fire, has a 7″ touchscreen. The Nexus 7 has slightly higher resolution at 1280 x 800 compared to the Kindle Fire’s 1024 x 600 screen resolution. Both units have similar charging times and battery life as well.
For gamers, the Nexus 7 has a gyroscope and an accelerometer to allow for motion sensitivity during game play. This feature is not available on the Kindle Fire. Gamers will be able to access nearly 600,000 apps and games via GooglePlay.
In addition, the Nexus 7 has on a NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 quad-core processor to allow for smooth response during game play and the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously without slowing loading times. The Nexus 7 runs on Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. Google intends to preload the Nexus 7 with user friendly Google Apps.
In terms of market share, Barnes & Noble has sold 3.3 million Nook e-readers to take 5 percent of the tablet market, AsusTek Computer Inc. has sold 2.1 million Transformer tablets to take 3 percent of the tablet market and the remaining 14% of the market share belongs to various smaller companies.
